Biometrics
Biometrics are measurable physical characteristics or personal behavioral traits used to recognize the identity or verify the claimed identity of an individual. A biometric system is an automated tool for measuring and evaluating these characteristics or traits for the purpose of human recognition. Examples include:
DoD Biometrics Fusion Center
"The Biometrics Fusion Center is taking a leadership role in biometric technology," said Vernon Bettencourt, deputy CIO/G-6. The Center will be instrumental in guiding the successful implementation of biometrics to support mission-critical warfighter applications, and working with the Department of Homeland Security, State Department, and other agencies on collective U.S. Government goals for biometrics."
The BFC is the test and evaluation facility for the DoD Biometrics Management Office (BMO). The BMO is the central entity within the DoD responsible for leading, consolidating, and coordinating the development, adoption, and institutionalization of biometric technologies for combatant commanders, Services and Agencies, to enhance Joint Service interoperability and warfighter effectiveness.

National Biometrics Security Project
The NBSP is led by a highly experienced management and technical team, with specialized backgrounds in biometrics gained in industrial, government, and academic careers. The organization is designed for vigorous and economical mission performance by a structure that includes functional work areas in: Operations; Research, Standards, and Evaluations; Privacy and Civil Liberties; Government and Industrial Relations; Information and Communications; as well as appropriate accounting, administrative, and legal support.
A permanent staff is efficiently supplemented, as required, by external organizations contracted to perform much of the substantive technical work including organizations and individuals in the private sector, and eminent research organizations such as the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR) at the West Virginia University and other academic institutions associated with CITeR.
NBSP is headquartered in Washington DC with a major technical and operations center in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Biometrics Knowledge Center
The BKnC located at West Virginia University focuses on academic research issues surrounding the use of automated systems for human identification and verification based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic - biometrics. The center's four main research issues are:
- Technologies
- Measures of Effectiveness
- Economics and Workforce
- Political and Societal Implications
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of The Biometric Knowledge Center (BKnC) is to:
- Foster a national agenda for academic research on biometrics
- Execute Federal funding in biometric research and areas closely related to biometric research
- Serve as a clearinghouse for academic biometric research
- Connect multiple institutions conducting biometric research
- Provide effective technology transfer processes
- Promote a research environment conducive to economic development in biometrics-related technologies
